To create a new cellular confinement system that meets the engineering requirements for long-term performance in roads, rails, slopes and walls, PRS embarked on an ambitious R&D program. The result was the development of a Novel Polymeric Alloys (NPA) for geocells, called Neoloy®.
New Geocell Technology
PRS-Neoweb is manufactured from Neoloy, a novel polymeric alloy (NPA) developed by PRS, based on polyamide nano-fibers in a polyolefin matrix. Neoloy combines the ductility of HDPE with the dimensional stability and creep resistance of polyamides. The properties of this alloy enable a stiff geocell with higher tensile strength, resistance to creep and high temperatures, and dimensional stability than common HDPE-based geocells. PRS-Neoweb with Neoloy maintains its engineering characteristics and geometry for the project lifespan, even under dynamic loading, thermal cycling and high temperatures.
High modulus NPA geocells provide a quantifiable improvement in stiffness, strength and durability, which enable the replacement of high-quality aggregate base with lower modulus (lower cost) infill such as local soils and recycled materials with no degradation in performance. Particularly in road pavement applications. The ability to deploy high-strength geocells with granular subbase infill in the base layer of pavement structures is an ideal sustainable solution that can reduce construction costs and lifecycle maintenance.
The Neoloy novel polymeric alloy enables optimization of the PRS-Neoweb geocell with the performance requirements of the general project type. This customization optimizes the performance as well as the cost according to the project’s requirements
Comparison with HDPE
The properties of this alloy enable a strong and stiff geocell with higher tensile strength, resistance to creep and elevated temperatures, and dimensional stability than commonly-used HDPE-based geocells. Not only do conventional HDPE geocells lack the required stiffness and dimensional stability, which limits their use to erosion control and low volume road applications. They are also only offered in one “type” for all applications, regardless of the requirements.
